Beyond Project Controls

I wish present my blog “beyond project controls” Why this title?  Project controls has so many implications that it is difficult to mark the borders; however it expands continually, like any other discipline. Controlling a project involves many processes and a “project controls system” has implications with organization, business policies and, virtually, with all project management processes and disciplines.

An example: the importance to manage and improve contractual relationships, a new parameter in addition to those traditional of time, cost, quality.

“Beyond project controls” also deals about topics “on the border” like float mapping (my next post in progress), delay claims management and other traditional major topic like integrated project controls system and all subsets that it includes.

To conclude the introduction to this blog, I wish express my perception about the evolution of project controls; I believe our discipline should become more focused on “strategic project management” giving emphasis to processes of strategic project planning, as well as to methods and approaches targeted to a better integration with other project management processes, in order to enhance capability of the Owner as well as of the Contractors, with their respective needs of project management.

I am a chartered civil engineer and certified CCP (cost engineering and total cost management) at AACE International, with thirty years of experience in project management of the construction sector. I deliver expert planning, programme management and project controls on multibillions-Euro infrastructure programmes, including highways and railways, metro, air terminals and complex buildings (commercial, residential, schools), with some experience in oil & gas and power. I worked in advanced contexts of project management (from matrix organizations of EPC contractors to large employers organized to manage complex capital projects), by undertaking various roles in the field of project management / controls and contract management; this diverse range of experiences allowed me to gain knowledge on the various components of project controls (schedule, cost estimating, budgeting and cost control, progress and performance measurement, risk and claim management). I am an Italian citizen, currently in Italy.
